I mean on your own, without a machine. I've only reached 350-ish depth so far and everything's okay. I don't quite understand why Seamoth can't go beneath 200 but without Seamoth you can go much deeper, but that's not the question. There has to be an actual depth limit to which you can dive and stay alive, right?

Thanks. Someone discovered a glitch - if you switch to the repair tool while entering Seamoth, you can use it while inside, to repair as it takes damage in real time. Load the repair tool with a ion battery and you can go damn far before it runs out. There's a mod on Nexus that among a ton of changes has Seamoth upgrade that goes to 1800m.Depth modules are required, you literally cannot get where you need to go without them. You generally get them at the point in the game that you need them, and it also signals when you have to switch from Seamoth to Prawn as your primary vehicle.
