If you want a flat land for large base, Boskar Beach or Boskar Meadow. Close enough to most important locations, some modest metal and obsidian nodes at stone's throw. It's kinda halfway between all interesting places on the map. If you don't mind being away from mainland and obelisks, the eastern part of the desert is awesome.
