Today when I went to switch from to AC, I noticed the passenger side was still blowing hot. I remember hearing some of the tapping noise some of you mentioned and it sounds like the blend door actuator. This is on the driver side. I can look up from the floor of the driver side and see the actuator moving when it clicks. It is above and behind the steering wheel. It appears likeep I can access the actuator from behind the instrument cluster, but if there is a bar or metal plate directly behind the cluster then I can't obviously get to it.
