The Lightning Forge build is the only way I've found to make progress. The RNG makes it really tedius, since I have to wait for Lightning Strike to target the blacksmith. In a game with so many factions, being forced into a specific build listed on a wiki somewhere seems like horrible design. I must be missing something.

I recommend taking a look at the wiki's research builds, see what kind of upgrades they recommend and why. At first, I really liked Elf with the Elf bloodline, while picking up any +clicking rewards, +faction coins (since those buff all elf production), and +assistants or +mana regen.
