Oct 20, 2020 · My platform was built by a local welder, it bolted onto the rolled gunwales of the boat. When I first got mine there were virtually no poling skiffs in SW Louisiana and very few boats with platforms. After a few years there were 5 J16's rigged identical to mine running around Lake Charles with the same platform built by the same welder.
To cut the foam I used a long razor knife with a sheet of ply wood clamped over the foam to use as a straight edge. Pulling the knife with a slight angle toward the board kept directly on the line. I may redo the first section I started near the transom, not super happy with how it turned out.

They are meant for quick, shorter cast with heavier lines (sinking heads) and to turn over big bass flies. 7'11" is the maximum length allowed for rods in bass tournaments, so that is the reason for that length. It has nothing to do with its design for making it a better casting rod.

The Hull Marine products kit removes the slop and provides much better support for the jackplate. I'll likely order the kit for mine, even though its pretty much brand new just to prevent any issues.

The final product is comparable (better IMO) to any of the top priced rods and you build exactly like you want it. The Epic blanks are all trout stuff and they're are made by CTS. I picked up the Salt Marsh Heron 18 this week and have a similar issue with the top of the 115 motor hitting the poling platform, even with the jackplate fully down.
