Honestly, the mercedes OM617 is a better engine than the 6.2/6.5 and will return better fuel economy. In fact any diesel engine you could get from anywhere would be better. Cummins, perkins, cat, Isuzu, mitsubishi, toyota, hino, duramax, mercedes, nissan, VW etc. I believe you're better to stick to petrol V8's than waste time and effort on a 6. ...This conversion takes approximately 40-50 hours to complete. Just go 22re or 3rzfe and turbo it, they can make a-lot more power than either of the v6’s with better mpg. If you dont care about brand or resale value, go with a 6bt, maybe a 4bt but that has worse mpg, an om617 would work too but not nearly as reliable as a cummins

I re drilled the Toyota flywheel to fit the Mercedes crankshaft as well as machined a custom pilot bearing adapter. I just finished the engine build and am working on hooking everything back up.

Feb 13, 2013 · My OM617 was in an 84 (also had 85) 300D that was stock. I read a lot of folks getting in the 40's but never did anyone on the Benz forums claim such. My experience was 22-24 mpg on diesel and WVO with no discernible difference in power between the two. Gearing, weight of the vehicle, tires size, mod's etc. are all going to play into the equation.

The OM617 is the way to go for a daily driver in a Jeep or small pickup - it was designed for luxury daily drivers. They are very simple, quiet, decent fuel consumption and do not require re-gearing. Rated torque is reached at 2400 rpm, rated horsepower at 4300.

Jun 18, 2012 · I think if the only thing changed is the engine (keeping the 4 spd behind the 617), your MPG would not be what it was with the 4 cyl. I am not familiar with the OM617 numbers, but if it is a turbo, you would need to change the rear end ratio (higher=lower numerically) to get anything close to 30 MPG. LOTS of cutting and fitting but maybe it's an easier fit in a Ranger. The exhaust is pretty simple - just a pipe out of the engine bay. The first section of the Mercedes pipe will make the exhaust work easier. Any radiator for a 5.0/Ranger swap should handle the cooling. Diesels are not generally hard to cool.I have seen them on YJ or TJ frames before and they kept the 4.0's but you could always drop in a small diesel if you keep the tire height and gearing in check.
