Ray has trouble speaking and therefore mostly uses grunts and gestures to communicate. In 2004, photographer and author Mark Laita took photos of Ray and his family for his book, Created Equal.
The family lives in an isolated shack in rural West Virginia in the village of Odd, 75 miles south of Charleston.
