Kawasaki mule overheating.

The over heating light come on after about a 15 to 20 minute ride. The mule was very sluggish until we found one plug was not firing correctly. I fitted another and away we go easily up the hills now but the seems to be a loud knocking noise. Is that normal for the v twin? Air in the system is not easy to bleed out. The service manual gives you a specific procedure for this. And yes air in the system WILL cause overheating-guaranteed.
